Unemployment rate drops sharply in late 2019

INSEE released the e Thursday, February 13, 2020, the latest unemployment figures ¹ in Francethe unemployment rate reached 8.1% of the workforce in the 4 th quarter 2019, against 9.5% at the beginning of the five-year ( th quarter 2017 ).


After a slight increase of 0, 1 point in the third quarter, the unemployment rate fell sharply from 0, 4 points in the last quarter 2019, from 8.5% to 8.1% of the workforce in France ( excluding Mayotte )With a decline of 165,000 people in job demand over a year, the unemployment rate, therefore, reached its lowest level since the end of 2008.

This rate precedes and thwarts INSEE's own statistics, which predicted, in a note published in December 2019, that "  the unemployment rate would reach 8.2% in mid-2020  ".

In mainland France, the unemployment rate even fell below 8%, standing at 7.9%. A good performance that brings a little more the country's ambition by President Emmanuel Macron achieve an unemployment rate of 7% in the year 2020. A goal already reached by 24 departments that show a rate equal to or less at 7%.

Another encouraging factor: the number of long-term unemployed fell for the first time in ten years below the symbolic bar of one million people, down 0.4 points in 2019. The situation of seniors is also improving significantly: the unemployment rate for people over 49 years fell to 5.8% (-0.5 points in the quarter), the lowest level since the start of 2012, and the employment rate for people aged 50-64 reached 63.3 % (+ 1.1 points), continuously increasing since 2010.

This positive quantitative dynamic is combined with a more qualitative improvement which sees the employment rate on permanent contracts for 15-64-year-olds reaching 49.3% at the end of 2019 (+0.2 points over the quarter), high equaled only once. from 2009 to the end of 2018.
